final cut

EXTENDED CUT

Additional Footage [Extended]
We decided to cut this sequence from the end of the final cut for the examiner's marking purposes, as the overall sequence would have been too long.

Another reason for which decided to cut this footage is because some of the feedback which we received from our peers and our target audience suggested that the scene and the dialogue 'dragged' too much. Also, one of our teachers added that it developed the sequence beyond an opening sequence, because the character profiles began to develop at too much of an early stage.

Brain storm moment

LOOK AT ALL OUR FEED BACK

We presented the rough cut of zomped to an audience to gain some feedback as to the successfulness of the film so far. Although we felt we had done an extremely good job the feedback showed us exactly where we were lacking, and we were lacking alot. Alot of people said that the sounds were too fake and alot of people felt it looked too much like a trailer. For this reason we decided to reshoot and get exactly what we needed.

FEED BACK

This was a comic created by george to show the feedback we collected after our screening of the new opening.

Production Diary

Production Diary

George has spent many hours at home editing footage and adding  animation effects to make it look better. He has also worked a lot on the animations for the titles at the beginning of the film too. We have encountered a few problems when it came to exporting the film as it didnt copy the animation of the titles over so we all have to redo the titles in school hours instead which is going to be quite difficult as the computers shut down automatically at 5 and the teachers go home too.

Production Diary

Production Diary
we made a questionnaire to give to people for feedback, all three of us all put input in to think of the questions. Also since our progress for zomped since we have refilmed, we decided to show a few people our film opening to see what they think. We gave them our questionnnaire to fill in and give back to us.We got a lot of comments saying people really like the sound effects and that the genre of the film is obvious. Then when people rated our opening we got a range of 6.5-9 out of 10 which was quite good. Also in todays lesson we have videoed a few people and one of our teachers and asked for thier comments to see what they think of our film. We are currently creating a cartoon storyboard presenting all of the feedback we recieved from both students and teachers, we will put this on the blog soon.

Feedback

After reading each of our feed back forms we came to the conclusion to re film zomped.
The most popular comments were:

the dubbing was all wrong
american accents were bad
was boring
sloppy
the sound effects were really bad
hated the zombie at the end

We improved each one of these flaws when reshooting while also adding a lot more shots and angles. We also changed the script completely to go better with the comedy theme

shawn and scott quick cutts

In shawn of the dead and scott pilgrim our two chosen films in which we took influence from ,both use quick cuts. We used the same due to the comedy value it has

DIARY

Today we came up with another idea to use action lines within our movie opening, this would add to the geeky, comic gaming effect. We also changed the text from AHH to OMG to fit in with the script. George worked on the titles while i came up with new and interesting ideas to add to the opening that would add to our movie opening.

makeup

Kaitlyn was the makeup artist for our film opening. To create a underslept weiry look  kaitlyn defined the cheek bones and created bags under the eyes. this was done using three different shades of brown all natural vegan eye shaddow. She also used two different bronzers and a pasty white shimmer to give  the illusion Emma hadnt been in the sun. Ever.Kaitlyn also used eyeliner to create the freckles on Emmas cheeks and nose.

Production diary group meeting

Today we continued to give ideas towards our opening titles. We edited the clips adding music, sound effects, dubbing over  our voices and improving the titles. We experimented with different fonts ect. We also experimented with the titles by allowing them to move with the movement of the scene. For example if the gate opens the title will follow the movement of the gate.

We also came up with new and exciting ideas for small visual effects.

Zomped movie poster 2

Zomped poster 1

This is my design for the first poster for our movie opening zomped. The idea was to have a close up shot of a zombie pixelated to make it a little more gameified. It is intended  to look like the zombie is coming out of the game . This works well because of the plot and theme of our movie. The fact there is a lot of bold red used within the poster makes it stand out and is more likely to attract the audience.

Group meeting 1

Today we pitched our original film opening sequence ideas to one another, and decided to go with 'ZOMPED'. We have discussed and agreed upon when/where we will film each shot, and how we will plan the production, as well as how we will gather costumes/props together.

meeting 2 planning

Today, me and my group researched various opening credits sequences to horror, comedy, and horror-comedy films

The first shot of our opening sequence will be a tracking shot going up the driveway to a house and through an open garage. We would like to have credits similar to these, at various angles, to look as if they are placed upon a van, the driveway, the house, etc.

We would also like to have captions for the characters appear on screen to identify their name and personality. This would link to the video-game/comedy genre.

Our Film Inspirations

This is the opening credits to the film Shaun of the dead. This film inspired us when thinking of ideas for our clip because we loved the titles and the way they were presented because they were so varied for example when the actual name of the film appears on the screen it is on the ground where they are all walking. Also we love the idea of when a character appears on the screen they get introduced with a box that says their name, the characters name and then something little about the character. All the words presented are shown in a different way and they come from different positions. The Music in the clip is quite upbeat and this contrasts with the acting because the characters are acting like zombies in their everyday life and usually in normal predictable films the music would be eerie, dark and scary and this music has a beat in it so this also makes it different.

RISK ASSESMENT IMPORTANT !!!!!!!!!!

Zombed storyboard

Here is the storyboard we created for the ZOMPED opening sequence. Initially we all agreed on each individual frame, then Kaitlyn drew up the storyboard, George took photos of each frame and put them together in a video and Emma narrated. In addition to the frames listed here, we will over-shoot by recording some extra, different frames and decide what works best when it comes to editing.

meeting 4 planning shooting schedule and script

Today we wrote up a final draft for the script and filled out a shooting schedule. Although the script is final, we will, when shooting, take a few of each shot which contains dialogue, changing the lines slightly each time so that we can decide on what dialogue works best at a later stage; this may involve asking someone from our target audience. When writing the script, we took into consideration conventions of the different genres such as Comedy, for example Penny saying 'that was just my brother' (after having hit him with a cricket bat and knocked him out).

Zomped

meeting 3 for zomped

Today, we filled out our Production Diaries in the LAP Chart and discussed the Storyboard, Shooting Schedule, Mise-En-Scene and Script for the opening sequence.

Mario theme for Zomped

We would like the soundtrack for ZOMPED to feature elements of themes such as the Mario theme, to link it to the video-game theme(s). We could record a cover of this theme, accompanied by a chilling background track to also present conventions of Horror.

OPENING SEQUENCE PRELIM EVALUATIONS- A/S EXAMPLES

The first shot is shown to be a medium shot of the girl running. I really admire the expression shown on her face as she was running away. They also captured a good use of match on action as she was running up the stairs. I liked the use of the blue filter to recreate the idea of night. This adds to the spookiness and thrill of the video. Before revealing the character they used his shadow to mask who he is.This draws a sense of curiosity to the audience.I like how they used the cut scenes to track a journey the girl was taking to hide. This opening sequence had a good use of mise en scene due to the constant change in location. This interests the audience alot more than just within one room. There is also a good use of slow motion editing to capture the girls expression of fear closer. This is shown by a close up, soon followed by a long shot. They accomplish tension by dragging out the chase with slow motion and the masking shadow of the killer. They use a wide variety of shots and angles to make the sequence interesting and thought provoking. I found the use of opera music in the background climatic and an add to the tension they were building.I also found the use of photoshopped  transitions and typography cleaver and effective.

Pacific Rim Opening Sequence (sci-fi)

Camera
The scene opens in pitch black. Then camera then zooms into a close up of an electric blue crack in the ocean with sparks and electric pulses coming from it. The camera then cuts to a scene of the golden gate bridge being attacked by a large creature. The camera is is made to be shaky to add to the effect of an earth quake like traumatic moment. The camera then closes up and pans left tracking the car as its thrown across the bridge. The camera then switches to an angle looking up from the bridge,The cars falling into the eye line  of the camera making it to look like it was to be falling on top of you. There is daibree falling on top of the camera. This is similar to the next cut where there is water being splashed onto the lens of the camera. This gives the opening scene a realistic feel and makes you believe it is happening. This scene includes tracking shots, static shots, ariel views, pans, tilts, close ups, zooms, medium long shots and long shots and hand held shots giving it a wide variety of  camera angles.

Mise en scene
lighting
The lighting is different depending on the what is shown. A lot of the scene is shot outside there for they have used natural lighting for them. These were taken at different times of the day , therefore some parts are brighter than others.Other parts were taken inside and there for would have used studio lighting. The parts under the sea would have been done by a computer.
make-up
There doesn't seem to be any clear indication of make-up,apart from the one Asian woman shown wearing lipstick ,make-up ect. There is however a use of fake blood when the man's nose bled.

setting
The first part of the opening scene is set under the ocean ,where the whole plot rises from, It then cuts to the city in this case the golden gate bridge  it keeps changing from the bridge to the ocean to the sky where they are fighting the creature. It then cuts to a  street with people running and then back to the bridge. We are shown a news report of the golden gate bridge collapsed completely. This then cuts to a scene of an office building where people are screaming and running for their lives. This then cuts to a wasteland of burning litter with reactions across the world from the media including world leaders. The scene as a whole shows places from all around the world being attacked by these monsters. It then shows you clips of the robots sent out to attack them within the labs they are created.

sound
There is a small distant diagetic piece of music playing in the background.Over the top of this music is loud roars, planes, bullets, reporters talking, screams, bells, breaking of buildings, sirens, metallic grinding, robotic movement, hospital beebs, and crowds. There is also a voice over (presumably the main character)  talking about what's happened. This overlaps all the rest of the sound in order for you to concern trait on him.

Editing
There is a clear indication of editing within this sequence. This is shown by the amount of cut scenes used. The sequence has used handheld shots to create the home video approach as well as the professional news reporter static shots. A lot of the stuff scene is professionally made CGI.

props

The sequence is shown to use cars, robots, robotic head gear ect.

Costume
The most noticeable costumes used within the sequence are: The bright yellow boiler suits, smart wear worn by new reporters and world leaders, casual wear worn by civilians, white boiler suits and white hard hats, robotic arms and head gear ,military uniform, monster costume worn in the Japanese studio and the strange horned costume worn by the Asian woman.

The Great and powerful OZ opening sequence

I found alot of inspiration from the titles used within this title sequence.I particulary liked the use of art and visual illusions

INSIDIOUS 2010 OPENING SEQUENCE (HORROR)

Titles to INSIDIOUS

Camera
The movie opens with the camera focused on the light shade of the boys room. The camera then does a 360 degree turn to tilt down into the room of the boy This is extremely disorientating .This shot is a medium long shot of the boy laying asleep in his bed.The camera then pans right to guide you through the house, through the dark to be met by a candle lit figure zooming into a close up over her face.

Mise En Scene:
Costume:
The Opening scene does not feature any costume per say however the boy we see in the opening is shown to be wearing dark blue pyjamas. The elderly woman is shrouded in darkness there fore you are unable to see what she is wearing, however it seems like she may be wearing a dress or long cloak of some kind.

Lighting:
The lighting used within this scene is extremely dark and almost pitch black at times. However the lighting does become brighter in places when there is more artificial lighting used .Although this is simply just dim.The only used lighting seems to be a small lava lamp , a bed side lamp , 2 lamps in the hall way and a candle held by the elderly woman. The scene seems to have been filmed maybe around 4 am due to how their is vaguely a glimmer of light showing through the windows.

Make up:  The only make up that is seen is the old woman's face. She has had make up used to create the old frail and creepy look she is presenting to the camera.

Props:
There is no sign of any props that have been used noticeably , However the elderly woman is holding a small dimly lit red candle up to her face,This adds for dramatic effect. Red could be interpreted to mean evil, danger, blood, anger.Any of these interpretations could be plausible

Setting:
The opening scene is set in the main characters(the little boy) bedroom. However the full scene itself is set within a house. The camera leads us out of the boys room and throughout the hallways of the house. This allows us to explore the setting.

sounds:
The  only sound within the opening sequence is a loud, eary and slightly unsettling diagetic piece of music. The music starts quite soft however the tempo and dynamics of the composition raises as we are led throughout the hallways. The music finally reaches its climax as we are faced with the elderly woman.

Editing
The sequence is shown to be one flowing piece, there doesn't seem to be any indication of cuts or camera swap.

PREZI THE ENCOUNTER

Inspiration for movie pitch

DON'T TURN ON THE LIGHT
She commandeered the room in the basement of her dorm as soon as she realized she would have to pull an all-nighter in order to prepare for tomorrow’s final exam. Her roommate, Jenna, liked to get to bed early, so she packed up everything she thought she would need and went downstairs to study . . . and study . . . and study some more.
It was two o’clock, when she realized that she’d left one of the textbooks upstairs on her bed. With a dramatic sigh, she rose, and climbed the stairs slowly to her third-floor dorm room.
The lights were dim in the long hallway, and the old boards creaked under her weary tread. She reached her room and turned the handle as softly as she could, pushing the door open just enough to slip inside, so that the hall lights wouldn’t wake her roommate.
The room was filled with a strange, metallic smell. She frowned a bit, her arms breaking out into chills. There was a strange feeling of malice in the room, as if a malevolent gaze were fixed upon her.  It was a mind trick; the all-nighter was catching up with her.
She could hear Jenna breathing on the far side of the room—a heavy sound, almost as if she had been running. Jenna must have picked up a cold during the last tense week before finals.
She crept along the wall until she reached her bed, groping among the covers for the stray history textbook. In the silence, she could hear a steady drip-drip-drip sound. She sighed silently. Facilities would have to come to fix the sink in the bathroom…again.
Her fingers closed on the textbook. She picked it up softly and withdrew from the room as silently as she could.
Relieved to be out of the room, she hurried back downstairs, collapsed into an overstuffed chair and studied until six o’clock.  She finally decided that enough was enough. If she slipped upstairs now, she could get a couple hours’ sleep before her nine o’clock exam.
The first of the sun’s rays were beaming through the windows as she slowly slid the door open, hoping not to awaken Jenna. Her nose was met by an earthy, metallic smell a second before her eyes registered the scene in her dorm room. Jenna was spread-eagled on top of her bed against the far wall, her throat cut from ear to ear and her nightdress stained with blood. Two drops of blood fell from the saturated blanket with a drip-drip noise that sounded like a leaky faucet.
Scream after scream poured from her mouth, but she couldn’t stop herself any more than she could cease wringing her hands. All along the hallway, doors slammed and footsteps came running down the passage.
Within moments other students had gathered in her doorway, and one of her friends gripped her arm with a shaking hand and pointed a trembling finger toward the wall. Her eyes widened in shock at what she saw. Then she fainted into her friend’s arms.

On the wall above her bed, written in her roommate’s blood, were the words: “Aren’t you glad you didn’t turn on the light?”by S.E. Schlosser

The Opening sequence is extremely cold and dull. This is perfect for the film due to its extremely Gothic and depressing qualities. The whole sequence stays to a very rustic feel and only uses the colours blue, black and white. This conveys and extremely cold and hostile mood within the sequence. My favourite part is the snow used at the end. I like this because it disorientates the audience. The music used is extremely floaty and chimey. This has alot of contrast to the sequence and gives the idea that not everything is as dark as it seems.

Art of the title

1. What is the definition of a Title Sequence?
A title sequence is a method that the film industry uses to present the director, actors, presentors ect. this is accompanyed by sound and visual effects

2. What is the function of a Title Sequence?
The function of a title sequence is to inform the audience as to who is in the film and who helped to create it. These are normally only the key features

3. Name three films featured in the A Brief History of the Art of the Title Sequence?
The phantom of the opera
Singing in the rain
the pink panther

4. Select a film Title Sequence shown in the A Brief History of the Art of the Title Sequence and discuss how the Title Sequence uses Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements and what kind of mood/feeling is created as a result? Name of chosen Film Title Sequence: Use of Typography Elements (text): Use of Visual Imagery/Sound Elements: Mood/feeling:
The phantom of the opera  uses a very deary and dark typography. The text is seen to be almost phantom like, enphasising the title of the film. The mood is extremely dark and depressing due to the the lack of colour.Singing in the rain uses an extrwemely bright a cheerful typography. The use of yellow conveys a feeling of happyness and joy. This contrasts with the title of "singing in the rain" due to the fact rain is seen to be an extremely dull and depressing weather. The yellow text also reflects the colour of the raincoats worn by the people in the background. The pink panther uses an extremely suave and sophisticated typography. The text conveys an extremely french atmostphere due to the text being in cursive.I found the use of the pather symbolic however i found this trait appealing and somewhat cute. They use pink writing which is extremely appropriate for the title.

5. What does the use of Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements in the chosen film Title Sequence suggest about the theme/content of the film? A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS The typography is extremely plain however, The use of animation within the seqence covers the fact  it is so plain. I extremely enjoyed the dark, deary atmostphere of the sequence. It has a tim burton feel towards it and even though it is extremely gothic and creepy. it has a hunting beauty about it. The sound used within the sequence is extremely classical and soft adding to the old age victorian feel.

6. Select another film Title Sequence shown in the A Brief History of the Art of the Title Sequence and discuss how the Title Sequence uses Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements and what kind of mood/feeling is created as a result? Name of chosen Film Title Sequence: Use of Typography Elements (text): Use of Visual Imagery/Sound Elements: Mood/feeling: iron man
The title sequence for iron man is extremely cleaver in the way they use animation. The animation is shown to look like blueprints. This is an exceptionally good trait and is extremely relevant to the movie itself. The text is lit up and is very similar to tron  however i feel this is appropriate and is quite inventive. The sequence gives off an extremely futuristic and electric atmosphere  bringing an instantaneous burst of excitement to the audience.

7. What does the use of Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements in the chosen film Title Sequence suggest about the theme/content of the film? The fact the sequence uses bright lights and blue print style animation conveys the idea that it is either sci-fi or super hero. The sequence gives off an extremely futuristic vibe.

8.Visit the following website: Art of the Title watch the sequences and read the 6 Film Title Sequence interview with Richard Morrison. The videos are on vimo and will take a little while to load so be patient.

What kind of nuance does Richard Morrison look for when creating a Title Sequence? Select 2 of the 6 Morrison Title Sequences (CHOICE: Brazil, Batman, High Fidelity, The Dreamers, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Vantage Point) and answer the following questions: Name of 1st chosen Film Title Sequence created by Richard Morrison: Use of Typography Elements (text): Use of Visual Imagery/Sound Elements: Mood/feeling: Sweeny Todd: The demon barber of fleet street

9. What does the use of Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements in the chosen film Title Sequence suggest about the theme/content of the film? The typography used within the "Sweeny Todd  title sequence is extremely plain,This is backed up by the use of white. The font of the text is "Times New Roman".This is extremely appropriate due to the time period the movie is set.The fact that the text is made to be so plain and formal is to draw focus to the visual imagery. The imagery shown within the sequence depicts darkness, blood ect. At the beginning of the sequence it shows  rain and thunder, this conveys an extremely dull and depressing mood. The imagery shown seems to have red as the brightest colour, drawing focus to the blood. This shows that blood is a key element within the movie. The imagery also foreshadows the movie linking things in such as ; The barbers chair, meat grinder, cogs, trapped door, pies. The fact the title sequence uses so much blood in a number of different ways and also tracks the journey that the blood takes from the barbers chair, makes the whole experience of the sequence slightly uncomfortable and uneasy. Although the typography is extremely plain it soon changes to a bright crimson to announce the title of the film (tying in with the theme of blood). The sequence uses an orchestra for the opening music. This is extremely appropriate due to the fact it is a musical. The melody creates a climax at times by changing the tempo and dynamics of the composition.

10. What does Richard Morrison explain about the Film Title Sequence?
"Animating blood and its movement became the most crucial and challenging element of the sequence."- Richard Morrison
Richard Morrison explains that he had to build  platforms and then pour fake blood down them to imitate the blood movement and film it. he explains that he wanted to give it a comical feel, which worked extremely well. " I really like this narrative piece (mine) and those coloured frames (Shay Hamias, director)."- Richard Morrison

11. Does Richard Morrison feel the Film Title Sequence was successful, why or why not? Name of 2nd chosen Film Title Sequence created by Richard Morrison: Use of Typography Elements (text): Use of Visual Imagery/Sound Elements: Mood/feeling:Batman

12. What does the use of Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements in the chosen film Title Sequence suggest about the theme/content of the film? At the start of the sequence the production companies logo is shown with a light blue clouded background behind. The background then fades to a night sky(The time in which bats come out). The typography used is bright yellow with a bold Times Roman font. The yellow typography on the black background is obviously inspired by the suit that the 1989 batman wore. The logo on his suit is bright yellow, however the suit itself is pitch black. The sequence is extremely disorientating due to how dark it is , you are unable to see clearly where the camera is leading you.The sequence guides you around a dark metallic structure. This is unclear until the end due to how the parts of the structure are shrouded in the shadows. The structure is then revealed to be the logo trademark in which the main character of the batman uses. The visual imagery conveys a mysterious and uncomfortable feeling. The mood created by the dark colours is scary and yet at the same time depressing. The visual imagery of the sequence is also shown to be slightly damp, a lot like a bat cave. The fact that the sequence doesn't reveal to the audience straight away allows the audience to feel a sense of curiosity and wonder. The sequence uses an orchestra. The tempo changes throughout. At times the tempo is slow and sweepy however at other times it is fast and sudden. This adds to the climax created by the melody. Also the dynamics of the piece raises higher than other parts. This also helps to create a climatic peak.

13. What does Richard Morrison explain about the Film Title Sequence?
"The Batman 1989 environment was not that homogenized. In fact, there weren’t many people on the same platform and we were all very individual.
I did not know Tim before so I had to pitch for the project. We just had to make sure what we were about. I sat with him for a few minutes, and then just walked around the set of Gotham city. And that was it, really. I clearly remember I sat back in the car and all of a sudden, I knew it. I knew it had to be something about the classic Batman comic logo. I thought, ‘What if we think of that in a 360ยบ move? How about if it’s in landscape? How about I make it something you can move around, so you don’t quite know what it is?’ So that was the idea and then I just invented the world around it. Nobody did anything like it before so that’s why it probably retained its timeless feel." - Richard Morrison
